Ironman Hawaii 2011

Picture
Craig “Crowie” Alexander

The UCI-illegal Shiv showed the world that Specialized is serious about the category by building a bike exclusively for triathlon. Crowie used it to shave a whopping 13 minutes and 14 seconds off his previous best time on the bike leg.

Congratulations

All new 2012 Shiv

Picture
With just a few days remaining before making its competition debut at Ironman Kona, I'm excited to introduce you to one of the most revolutionary bikes Specialized has ever created - The 2012 Shiv.

Aero, Fuel, Fit - The New Rules of Triathlon   Without the constraints placed on bike design by the UCI, there are no limits. We put together the best engineering and triathlon minds in the business to create this purpose-built, no-hold-barred tri machine. By combining unparalleled aerodynamics, an integrated hydration system, and geometries that were developed through our BG FIT R&D team, there is no other bike on the market - or the roads of Kona - that offers triathletes the benefits of the Shiv 'Fuelselage.'

Pure triathlon: Introducing the all-new Shiv Illegal for UCI races — perfect for triathlon  KONA, Hawaii (October 4, 2011)--First, we threw all the road rules straight out the window.   To create the world’s best triathlon machine, we dismissed the concept than any true race bike could have a dual designation, like triathlon/time trial. And we discarded the idea that a triathlon bike should be held down by the UCI’s rules for road cycling.   Instead, we built a pure triathlon machine from the ground up. The end result is like nothing the world has ever seen.   The brand new Shiv offers unmatched aerodynamics, a fully integrated hydration solution, and a huge range of fit options. In short, the new Shiv is a triathlete’s dream.   “This bike ups the ante on superbike aero technology and dials in fit and integrated hydration perfect for triathletes,” said Mark Cote, Specialized’s aerodynamicist from MIT. “The aero shapes are crazy fast and super stable in crosswinds, the Fuelselage allows you to maintain aero while hydrating, and since the bike can easily fit your position, you stay can aero for longer – making you minutes faster on race day.”     Specialized engineers took everything they learned from creating the early versions of Shiv — which won four World Time Trial Championships — and created something that would never be allowed in road racing. The enormous cross-section behind the head tube allows for screaming-fast aerodynamics and a hidden hydration bladder.   “Most of the bikes ridden at Ironmans are TT bikes designed for cyclists,” said Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack. “Issues like carrying nutrition and hydration were never addressed in the design of these TT rigs, as they never needed to be. When these additions are added haphazardly by the athlete, all the engineering and aerodynamic advantages of these bikes are corrupted and lost.”   “After the success of the Shiv last year and the year prior in Kona, a group of us sat with Mark Cote and the engineering team at Specialized, and put forward what we as Ironman athletes need in our bikes, without compromising aerodynamics, functionality and bling,” Macca said. “This new Shiv is the product of that hard work and time. It is the most aerodynamic triathlon-specific bike available on the market today. Made by triathletes for triathletes. It is the first of its kind, and is testament to Specialized’s understanding of the complexities of this sport, and their desire to help athletes perform better.”   Specialized athletes will be racing on the all-new Shiv in Kona. With 18 World Titles already in the family, from Ironman to 70.3 to ITU, Specialized triathletes are eager for more. And now they have the perfect weapon.   Aero. Fuel. Fit. The all-new Shiv is pure triathlon.
